[MLB] RHP Gabriel Hughes Shines in First Career Cactus League Appearance
- (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) The Colorado Rockies took on the Los Angeles Angels in a Cactus League game on Sunday, with the Rockies coming away with a 5-1 victory. The game was highlighted by the impressive debut of right-handed pitcher Gabriel Hughes, the Rockies' first-round draft pick in 2023. Hughes, who was selected 10th overall by the Rockies, took the mound for his first career Cactus League appearance. The 21-year-old did not disappoint, facing the minimum through three innings while striking out four batters. Hughes showcased his impressive repertoire of pitches, including a fastball that topped out at 96 mph, a sharp breaking ball, and a changeup that kept the Dodgers batters off balance. The Rockies' bullpen continued the strong showing, holding the Dodgers scoreless until the ninth inning. RHP Connor Seabold, LHP Brad Hand, LHP Josh Rogers, and RHP Nick Mears each contributed one scoreless inning, before RHP Matt Koch came on to close the game. While Koch was tagged with one unearned run, the Rockies were able to hold on for the win. Offensively, the Rockies were led by outfielder Brenton Doyle, who had a strong showing at the plate. Doyle went 2-for-3 with one double, two RBI, and a stolen base, marking his first multi-hit game of the Spring. Infielder Coco Montes also had a productive day, going 2-for-3 and adding a double. Overall, it was an impressive performance by the Rockies, highlighted by the promising debut of Gabriel Hughes. While it is still early in Spring Training, the Rockies will be looking to build on this strong showing as they prepare for the upcoming season. If Hughes can continue to pitch at this level, he could be a valuable asset for the Rockies in the future.

[MLS] Colorado Rapids cried over VAR decision
- (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) The Colorado Rapids hosted Sporting Kansas City at home and recorded a 0-0 draw. On the local date of the 4th, the Rapids took their first point of the season with this result. Rapids fielded Darren Yapi and Michael Barrios up front, with Yapi aiming for his first season goal from the right of the Kansas City goal and Barrios from the left. Colorado striker Darren Yapi had decisive chances from the beginning of the match. In the 6th minute, Yapi received a clever pass from Cole Bassett and shot at the Kansas goal from the front, but was saved by goalkeeper John Pulskamp. Colorado kneeled over the VAR decision of the referee. M. Barrios sent a cross into the center of the Kansas goal, which deflected off midfielder Sam Nicholson's foot, leaving the goal area in chaos. Yapi kicked the ball toward the goal, and it went in, but the referee ruled it as offside and the goal was disallowed. Kansas missed a key chance in the 16th minute of the second half. Kansas midfielder Erik Thommy hit a strong left-footed shot from in front of the Colorado goal, but Yarbrough saved it skillfully. The ball hit Yarbrough's hand and rolled toward the goal, where Willy Agada kicked it with his right foot, but Yarbrough saved it with his leg. Afterwards, both teams continued to attack but were unable to score a goal, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw. Colorado will play an away match against San Jose on the 11th

[Culture] Colorado Ballet, Cinderella "Dance of Happiness"
- (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) It was a warm evening in early spring. On the gentle breeze, the scent of spring rode in. Following the warm wind, spring came to my heart as well. The Colorado Ballet performed "Cinderella." Ellie Caulkins Opera House was bustling with many people. I was able to truly experience the reputation of the Colorado Ballet. The performance began with Cinderella, her stepmother, and two stepsisters. The Colorado Ballet portrayed this scene comically. It was very different from the sad feeling I had when reading the fairy tale book. Whenever Cinderella's stepsisters appeared, the audience burst into laughter. The plot of the performance was not much different from the fairy tale "Cinderella." The only difference was that the two stepsisters were portrayed in a very comical way. Dana Benton and Yosvani Ramos' acting and dance skills stood out in this performance. The ballerina and ballerino were depicting "Cinderella" on stage with all their might. Especially the scene where the prince and Cinderella dance together at the end was amazing. The beautiful and graceful dance, like two swans, made the audience involuntarily marvel. The happiness of Cinderella and the prince flowed to the audience. And... Spring was coming. This ballet, composed by Sergei Prokofiev, was choreographed by Ben Stevenson. Colorado Ballet's Cinderella is scheduled to be performed at Ellie Caulkins Opera House until the 19th.

[Culture] Colorado Symphony, 'Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto'
- (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) It was Sunday at noon. The wind was blowing fiercely. Although it was a warm day, the wind made it feel colder. I walked in the direction where the sun was shining. It was a day like one in Beethoven's life. His spirit always shone bright, but in reality, he was a harsh man. It seemed like he lived within his shining spirit. The opening of the concerto is marked by a striking and majestic orchestral introduction, which leads into the piano's first entrance. The soloist's virtuosic passages are a hallmark of the piece, and they are interwoven with more lyrical and reflective moments, creating a sense of dynamic contrast that is characteristic of Beethoven's style. The concerto's second movement is a serene and contemplative adagio that provides a contrast to the first movement's energy, while the third movement features a lively and joyful rondo that showcases the soloist's virtuosity. Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, also known as his Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, is a celebrated piece of classical music that is renowned for its virtuosic piano passages and grand orchestral accompaniment. Written in 1809-1811, the piece was first performed by the composer himself in 1811 and has since become one of the most beloved and frequently performed concertos in the classical repertoire.

[Culture] Colorado Anime Fest: Celebrating Anime, Gaming, and Japanese Culture
- (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) The Colorado Anime Fest (COAF) is an annual three-day convention held in Denver that attracts anime, gaming, and Japanese culture enthusiasts from all over the country. COAF's first event was held in February 2016 and since then, the convention has become a staple for many anime and gaming fans. The convention, held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, provides attendees with a variety of programming options including panels, screenings, and gaming tournaments. One of the most exciting parts of the event is the opportunity to meet and interact with special guests from the anime and gaming industries. COAF also offers a marketplace where attendees can buy anime and gaming-related merchandise. One of the most recognizable aspects of COAF is its mascots, created by Ryan Zanfei of Tasty Peach Studios. The human mascot is named Sasoko, which means "mountain child" in Japanese, and was named by founding staffers after an internal vote. Sasoko is often dressed according to the convention's annual theme, and staff cosplayers portray her in both adult and chibi form throughout the event. If you manage to spot Sasoko during the convention, you might just win a prize! Attendees are encouraged to keep an eye out for her, and whoever finds her first can win a special reward. Another COAF mascot is Rocky, named after the Rocky Mountains which are an iconic part of Colorado's landscape. The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, which is Colorado's official state animal, served as the inspiration for the character. Rocky's name was chosen by COAF 2016 attendees from a long list of options, some of which were humorously provided by guest Christopher Sabat. In 2017, Tasty Peach Studios and COAF collaborated to create Rocky Meowchi, a cute limited edition variant featuring a Meowchi (a "cute mochi kitten plush" invented by Ryan) in a Rocky ram kigurumi. This adorable plush has long since sold out, but you may occasionally see Rocky Meowchi on official COAF merchandise like stickers and keychains. Whether you're a die-hard anime fan or just interested in Japanese culture, the Colorado Anime Fest is an event you won't want to miss. Keep an eye out for upcoming dates and plan your visit to experience all that COAF has to offer!
